16 Business Report underscores fears inflation has spread beyond energy and goods, whose prices are driven up by supply chain issues and Ukraine war. Associated Press , News Partner Posted Replies WASHINGTON — The prices of gas, food and most other goods and services jumped in May, raising inflation to a new four-decade high and giving American households no respite from rising costs. Consumer prices surged 8.6 percent last month from a year earlier, faster than April's year-over-year increase of 8.3 percent, the Labor Department said Friday. The new inflation figure, the highest since 1981, will heighten pressure on the Federal Reserve to continue raising interest rates aggressively. On a month-to-month basis, prices jumped 1 percent from April to May, much faster than the 0.3 percent increase from March to April. Contributing to that surge were much higher prices for everything from airline tickets to restaurant meals to new and … [Read more...] about Inflation Hits New 40-Year High As Price Increases Spread

Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade; states can ban abortion
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 23 WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Friday ended constitutional protections for abortion that had stood in America for nearly a half-century. The decision by the court's conservative majority overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling and is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states. The ruling, unthinkable just a few years ago, was the culmination of decades of efforts by abortion opponents, made possible by an emboldened right side of the court that has been fortified by three appointees of former President Donald Trump. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue, in state capitals and in Washington, and Justice Clarence Thomas, part of Friday's majority, called on the court to overturn other high court rulings protecting … [Read more...] about Supreme Court overturns Roe v. For Heat, seeing first-round pick Nikola Jovic turned into believing
The story of the draft-night marriage between Serbian big man Nikola Jovic and the Miami Heat is one of being smitten at first sight. For the Heat, it was catching the skilled 6-foot-11, 223-pound big man at last summer’s Under-19 World Cup in Latvia. There, Jovic was named to the All-Tournament team along with Chet Holmgren and Jaden Ivey — as in the Nos. 1, 5 picks, respectively in Thursday’s NBA draft. “He obviously was really good there,” Heat assistant general manager Adam Simon said Friday of Jovic, who the Heat drafted at No. 27 Thursday night. “He was really impressive for a kid who’s maturing his body.” For Jovic, all it took was a similar first impression, when he attended the Heat’s Game 5 blowout victory over the visiting Philadelphia 76ers during the Eastern Conference finals in May. “The atmosphere there,” Jovic said, “was crazy. The first impression was great.” That’s not to say instant attraction will lead to instant success, considering Jovic turned 19 on … [Read more...] about For Heat, seeing first-round pick Nikola Jovic turned into believing

Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges
Fourth-generation Texan Leah Payne moved to Denver last year in the wake of a new Texas abortion law that imposed some of the strictest abortion restrictions in the nation. “We left our family, friends, sold our house. We couldn’t live somewhere where abortion access was constantly under attack,” Payne told The Denver Post. At 19, Payne, who was on birth control, got pregnant. She didn’t have insurance at the time and decided to have an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic. “It was put out there as this big, bad thing that was traumatizing, but I never felt that,” Payne said. “Now, I’m 32, I’m a homeowner here in Denver and have a really successful career, a great partner, and I don’t think any of those things would have happened if I had not had an abortion at 19.” Payne chose her new home after learning about access to reproductive care in the state, and many Americans who woke up on Friday with fewer rights than they had a day prior may be forced to make similar … [Read more...] about Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges
